Position Title: Support Services Manager

(Full time position, 5 days/week)


Position Start Date:  February 17, 2020

Starting annual wage range: $64,000 - $68,000

Summary of Position:

Reporting to the Administrator, the Support Services Manager is accountable for the effective leadership of the Food Services, Housekeeping and Laundry departments according to established objectives, policies and regulations.  Responsibilities for the operation of the departments include budget preparation and management, menu planning, organizing work assignments and supervising all food services, housekeeping and laundry staff.

Responsibilities (Includes but not limited to):

  • Participates in the development, implementation, control and evaluation of departmental goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Ensures safety practices and procedures are adhered to.
  • Recommends and purchases the necessary equipment, chemicals and supplies needed to maintain a safe working environment for the care home, staff and residents.
  • Develops necessary documentation, audits and reporting systems to maintain accurate records and communication for the departments.
  • Participates in department budget preparation and control by implementing the policies and procedures of purchasing, ordering and inventory control.
  • Manages department staff according to HR policies and procedures.  This includes hiring, providing orientation, evaluating employee performance, providing coaching, recommending related training or education requirements, disciplining and/or terminating staff as required.
  • Defines duties, assigns workloads and arranges departmental staff scheduling. 
  • Ensures all food services, housekeeping and laundry equipment is maintained in proper working order.
  • Oversees the storage of food and related items.
  • Establishes and ensures maintenance of food rotations in order to minimize spoilage and waste.
  • Evaluates meals served to ensure established standards of quality and quantity maintained.
  • Oversees the preparation, portioning and serving of meals.
  • Works with the Dietician to ensure the nutritional and therapeutic requirements of the residents are met through menu planning and standardized recipes in accordance with the required standards.
  • Participates as a member of the leadership team by attending meetings and serving on Committees as required.
  • Works with other departments in the planning and delivery of special events, meals and programs as required.
  • Participates in planning and implementing contingency plans in response to emergencies and or interruptions in services.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a recognized program in Nutrition and Food Services Management.
  • Member in good standing or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management and/or Registered Dietician mandatory.
  • Food Safe Level 1 mandatory; Level 2 an asset.
  • A minimum of 5 (five) years Support Services (Food Services/Housekeeping/Laundry) supervisory experience in a long term care home setting including direct experience managing staff is preferred.
  • Experience managing unionized staff an asset.
  • Current Serving It Right Certificate mandatory.

Skills and Abilities:

  • High standards for customer service, food safety, physical space & environmental cleanliness.
  • Ability to develop and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, residents, families, contractors, volunteers and visitors to the care home.
  • Solid understanding of infection control protocol.
  • Demonstrated effective planning, time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and oral English skills.  A second language is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of office equipment and Windows based software including Word, Excel and Outlook.  Knowledge of PointClickCare, ComVida and CB Diets are assets.
